Thuya Garden
Tucked away on a mountainside on Mount Desert Island overlooking Northeast Harbor, Maine, Thuya Garden is an oasis in paradise. Though it’s a little more than an acre, it’s part of the larger Mount Desert Land and Garden Preserve, a 140-acre nature preserve open to the public for walking, hiking, enjoyment, and education. Though we visited before the garden was in full bloom in early June, it was splendid. The scent of cedar, the garden’s Latin namesake, pine, and balsam surrounded us as we hiked in peace, birdsong our only companion.

Roughly half perennials and half annuals, there’s always something blooming here. My favorite part of Thuya Garden was the abundance and variety of moss. Each cultivar was clearly labeled, and the diversity was exquisite. It’s a beautiful place to take a walk, sit and read, or spend quiet time with loved ones.
