The Getty Museum, also known as the J. Paul Getty Museum, is one of the most beautiful museums I’ve seen in the world. We had a wonderful afternoon at the museum, exploring the European, American, and International art from artists such as Rembrandt, van Gogh, Picasso, Édouard Manet, Nicolas Poussin, Jean-Antoine Houdon, and my personal favorite artist, Claude Monet. The museum complex boasts 4 large, multi-level pavilions, a vast collection of outdoor sculptures and fountains, a sprawling garden with hedge mazes, flowers, cacti, trees, and plants from around the world, and long, winding walkways.
Visitors can access the museum’s vast collections and main campus by walking roughly a mile up hill (15 minute walk), or by taking a tram which is handicap accessible and regularly departs in 5-10 minute intervals. Tickets are not necessary for this museum, with the exception of certain special exhibits and rotating collections, so the museum is open to all who love art and enjoy appreciating talented minds from around the world. Tours, Brochures and Information available in more than a dozen different languages, and there was always someone on hadn’t to answer any questions we had, help us find our next destination, or just simply give us more information about the exhibits.
My husband and I still talk about everything that we saw and the afternoon we spent under the warm California sunshine exploring the grounds. One of the most peculiar things we saw during our promenade around the gardens was miniature pomegranates growing on a tree that was spilling onto the walking path. It may sound silly, but we’d never considered where pomegranates came from, so to see them in their immature form was just so precious and unexpected! In the gardens, there were many species of dahlias in full bloom, as well as a number of other flowers neither of us could name (we are better at identifying flowers than fruits, I swear!).
If you’re in Los Angles, I can’t recommend visiting the Getty highly enough, because there’s something for everyone here!
