Soki Atami Hotel Review
Soki Atami is a relaxation hotel in Shizuoka’s Izu Peninsula, in Atami, Japan. We stayed here during our week exploring the Izu Peninsula and had the best time. The hotel is gorgeous with brilliant views of the ocean, fabulous fine dining, and convenient proximity to the best things to do in Atami. Featuring onsen baths, fantastic Japanese breakfasts, and one of the best dinners we’ve ever had, I cannot recommend staying at Soki Atami hotel highly enough!

Arrival at Soki Atami
Our arrival at Soki Atami was seamless. We’d taken the Shinkansen and a local train from Kyoto to reach Atami Station. From there, it was a seven-minute walk to our hotel, although there were other transportation options available, like taxis. Atami is a very safe and walkable city, even at night.
Upon our arrival, the hotel desk clerks offered to take our bags, make copies of our passports as required by law, and offered us tea. When everything was prepared, they explained how the facilities worked, what was nearby, and helped us make reservations for the following night’s dinner.
All told, it took about twenty minutes from the moment we walked through the front doors to enter our beautiful room.
Ambience of Soki Atami
The hotel has a very organic, natural feel. Grey slate floors, bare stick decor, and rocky outcrop accents gave it a somewhat rough, textural ambience. Paired with a rock and moss garden, fragrant floral arrangements, and numerous water features alongside traditional Japanese decor items like wooden screens, tatami floors, and incredible ocean views, the simplicity of this hotel felt even more welcoming.
Our Ocean View Room
Our room was gorgeous. I’ve always loved Japanese minimalism, and this hotel was no exception. I vividly remember the sense of relaxation that washed over me when I first entered. It was silent inside. Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows behind the balcony overlooking the ocean, filling the Japanese-style sitting area with warm sunlight.
There were plenty of outlets to charge our various electronics, and every piece of locally crafted furniture was selected for both form and comfort. Hanging on a closet were a set of pajamas and tabi socks with shoes for us to wear around the resort, which is a very common practice in Japan.
The bathroom was my favorite part. The scent of hinoki wood hit my nose the moment we first entered the room. Done in the traditional style, this bath was the perfect way to unwind after days of 35,000+ steps!

Arts & Crafts
In the lobby, there’s a spot to make custom-fragranced sachets using fragrant local herbs. Make your custom blend and stamp your name onto the handmade pouch for a unique souvenir.
Fine Dining
Our meals at Soki Atami were some of the best we had in all of Japan. I’ll soon post a full review. In the meantime, enjoy these mouth-watering photos!
Herb Garden
Outside the lobby is a working herb garden growing all manner of herbs, spices, and herbaceous plants used around the resort in everything from dinner and daily tea to scented sachets and seasonal onsen perfuming.
Gift Shop
In the lobby is a small selection of locally-made ceramics, wooden chopsticks, and other amenities. The Atami area and Shizuoka as a whole are famous for their ceramics, so be sure to pick up some as the perfect souvenir.
Japanese Kampo (Japanese Herbal Breakfast)
Breakfast is included every day and features a course of dishes local to the region, famed for their restorative properties. Keep an eye out for more about the wonderful dining options.
Moss & Rock Garden
This alone was enough to convince me to book this hotel (and its location, of course.) I love it when nature and creativity converge. Located around the hotel, this stunning garden is worth a visit if you’re in the area.
Ocean Views
While the hotel is a few blocks back from the ocean, it still has fantastic views. If you don’t book one of the higher rooms, take the local bus to Atami Castle for the very best views in the area!
Public Onsen
Separated by sex, the public onsen allow for unmatched relaxation, restoration, and recovery from long days hiking around the mountainous Atami region. Unwind in comfort and enjoy a wide selection of drinks and snacks after. Guests are not allowed to take photos inside the sauna or onsen area under any circumstances.
Steam Sauna (Women Only)
Located within the women’s onsen, this steam bath was the perfect way to improve circulation, rid the body of toxins, and loosen tight muscles.
Tea Salon & Rooftop Lounge
Located on the hotel’s roof, the views of Atami Bay are unmatched from the Tea Salon & Lounge. Here, an assortment of tea, coffee, wine, drinks, and flavored waters are offered complimentary throughout the day. It’s the perfect spot to watch the sunset or enjoy fireworks over the water.
