San Diego Museum of Art

I love visiting art museums for the same reason as anyone else. I love art. Museums are treasure troves of art I’d never otherwise have occasion to enjoy, and so we make a point to visit at least one local art museum in each new city we visit. Not only does it help fund the preservation of cultural and artistic artifacts, but it also gives us a way to experience the artistic terroir of a region. The San Diego Museum of Art was a beautiful museum housing incredible works that made the perfect pitstop to escape the hot afternoon sun. Here’s why we loved visiting during our time in San Diego.

Our Visit to The San Diego Museum of Art

The museum is easy to find within Balboa Park. There are plenty of signs, and it’s located in the main stretch near the Timken Museum of Art, Mingei International Museum, and The Old Globe. If you can’t find it, use Google Maps or ask one of the many employees wandering around how to find it. It’s a massive museum with a stone shell-esque dome above the door!

We had a splendid time walking through the museum. Though we only spent about an hour and a half admiring the various galleries, we felt it was the right amount of time.

Art & Artifacts at SDMA

The museum is home to more than 32,000 objects spanning a time frame of more than 5,000 years of human history, ending with present-day modern art. The museum has a vast collection of American, Native American, and Asian Art, reflecting a portion of some of the communities that have influenced the San Diego area.

Famous artists whose work is displayed here include Dalí, Matisse, Monet, O’Keeffe, Rivera, and many, many more. For a smaller museum, their collection was very strong and arranged in such a way that each gallery felt like its own little pod of art. Walking from space to space was definitely a journey worth taking.
