Summer is drawing to a close, and fall is nearly here. To make the most of this transitional period, before it becomes too cold, we’ve been trying to spend as much time as possible outside, enjoying the last few warm days here in Michigan. The leaves are already beginning to change colors, and the sun is setting sooner, so I wanted to squeeze in one last visit to a flower field before the end of the season and spend a day picking sunflowers. We took a trip to DeBucks Flower Farm, where they also have a corn maze, hay rides, and other fall themed activities, to pick some gorgeous Sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias, lavender, and other fall flowers.

It was such a beautiful, warm, sunny day, and honeybees were buzzing to and fro, minding their own business and gorging themselves on the thick, puffy, yellow pollen coating each massive sunflower. Some of the flowers were as big as my shoulders, others were the size of the palm of my hand. There were at least a couple dozen different varieties of sunflowers, and several colors ranging from blacks and purples to oranges and classic yellows.
Tickets for the U-Pick farm, where you can also snap a few fun fall themed photos, must be reserved online. We reserved our tickets as soon as they went on sale, a few weeks ago, for a total of around $25 for the two of us. To buy a bucket that you can fill with sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias, and other flowers that you pick yourself, is another $25. They also sell smaller amounts for $5 or $10, but I of course want as many flowers as possible, so I went for the big bucket. Along with your bucket or bag for flowers, they give you a pair of snips to cut your own flowers, so you only need to bring cash or a card, a sunhat, and your smile!

They also have some snacks available back at the U-Pick flower fields, like apple cider, apple cider donuts, hotdogs, and more. I couldn’t eat anything there being a vegetarian with a gluten intolerance, but Robin brought some apple cider donuts home and he said they were really good. The apple cider was also delicious!
I hope these beautiful flowers warm your heart and lift your spirits, and remind you that no matter what’s happening in life, the beauty of nature can brighten our days immeasurably, and give us hope for brighter things ahead.
