Each year Robin and I head out to an apple orchard and buy a few pounds of organic apples for ourselves, our family members, and our neighbors. We turn what we keep for ourselves into preserves, or eat them when they’re fresh in fall salads, or we make one of Robin’s favorite desserts, an apple crumble. This fall, we got an early start and headed to a local apple orchard to support their dedicated organic and sustainable farm and orchards, and as usual, it was a wonderful time!

We arrived right when they opened, and picked around 20 lbs of apples or a half bushel of apples, which was only $30. This may seem excessive, but we love supporting small businesses, and we were sharing them with our loved ones. At 100 years old, and more than 200 acres, this orchard is one of the largest orchards in the country, and their apples attract people from all over the Midwest and Canada.

Amazon Dress | Ollie Ella Basket | Hat (Old, similar) | Jack Rogers Sandals | T3 Micro Curling Iron
It was a comfortably warm day when we went apple picking, so I wore this cute gingham dress from Amazon, which comes in 4 different colors and is under $25, along with this old Janessa Leone straw hat, and a pair of Jack Rogers sandals. I used an old Ollie Ella basket with a hemstitch linen liner to keep our apple from getting damaged by the texture of the basket. Someone at the orchard liked my basket so much, they offered to buy it from me haha, so I guess if you want to stand out (or make a profit?), bring a cute basket to an apple orchard. And no, I didn’t sell it to the person asking, I like it too much!
Our friends and family were delighted to have fresh, organic Macintosh and Gala apples delivered on their doorstep. If you’re looking for a simple fall gift giving idea, pick some fresh apples, put them in a sweet vintage basket with a hand-written note, and leave them on a neighbor’s (or friend’s, or loved one’s, or coworker’s) doorstep. They’ll be able to make something yummy with them, or eat them as is. They’re as complicated or unfussy as the recipient wants them to be, which makes them the perfect gift!
