My husband and I recently enjoyed yet another meal at S2S Sugar 2 Salt on our most recent visit to Traverse City, and it did not disappoint! It was one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had, and I eat breakfast everyday, so I’m kind of an expert on the matter. They use fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from Northern Michigan, and created the fantastic breakfast dishes you see below. Read on to see why we love eating at S2S Sugar 2 Salt whenever we visit Traverse City.

Whenever we visit Traverse City, one of our favorite cities in Northern Michigan, we always make time to pop into S2S Sugar 2 Salt for brunch. They use only the freshest, locally grown ingredients sourced from across Northern Michigan, to reduce the environmental impact of dining out. This means that everything served here is as fresh as can be, usually harvested a day before being served, or even the same day, making it the freshest place to eat in Traverse City.
While the restaurant itself is small and unassuming, the meals more than make up for the austere surroundings, and each dish transports diners to a world of culinary expertise that can only be offered after years of refining, practice, and constant improvement. The owners and chefs at S2S Sugar 2 Salt pour their heart and soul into every dish, which according to them menus are made with love, and create fanciful, aesthetically pleasing, colorful dishes prepared from the most vibrant components of Northern Michigan’s bounty.
S2S Sugar 2 Salt is the purest expression of plant based dining found in Northern Michigan, and each plate reflects the eateries commitment to providing their community with delightful, wholesome nourishment, which is why it’s one of my favorite places to eat in the state.
One of my favorite items on their menu is the Potato Waffle, served with a poached hens egg with a bright orange yolk, hollandaise sauce, crisp leeks, and pea shoots. We order it without the beef brisket, and instead ask for extra greens on top. My husband and I also love the sunny side up egg on fresh asparagus, served with a sun ripened tomato compote and farm fresh cheese.
Their staff are fantastic about making substitutions around dietary restrictions, and were so friendly and happy to help us find things on the menu that worked for us. There’s such a charm to this place, knowing that the employees are happy, the food is ethically and sustainably sourced, and that by dining here we’re helping to support a family owned business, I absolutely love it. S2S Sugar 2 Salt may not be luxury in the sense that it’s over-the-top posh or serving exotic fare, but it is luxurious in the sense that it’s the absolutely best of the delicious food Northern Michigan has to offer, which is why I had to include it in my Luxury Dining series.
The next time you’re in Northern Michigan, make the trip to S2S and see for yourself why we keep coming back for more. In the meantime, click here to read my guide to Traverse City, and read all about my 50 favorite restaurants in Michigan, here.
