Anyone who knows about Scottish cuisine, or foods for which Scotland is famous, knows that wild caught salmon is a staple of Scottish cuisine. Unfortunately, many places serve salmon that is too dry and overcooked, or lacks flavor. Angels with Bagpipes is not one of those establishments. In fact, it is one of the very highest rated restaurants in all of Scotland, and is rumored to soon be receiving a coveted Michelin Star award for culinary excellence.
The restaurant has ample, intimate seating both indoors and outdoors, as well as a view of bustling Roxburgh Court and an outdoor seating section that spills onto The Royal Mile, Old Town Edinburgh’s most distinctive and fascinating street. Appearing in a cameo in the upcoming Fast & Furious 9 movie, this restaurant is sure to only continue its ascent into the heavens of fine dining supremacy.
My husband and I are both pescatarians, which means we eat a lot of seafood, and we both particularly enjoy a good salmon. The best I’ve ever had, leagues above the rest, was served to me by a cheery waitress with a delightfully thick Scottish accent and when she warned me how delicious the house salmon dish was, called the cured salmon, I was not prepared for the flavor and delightful culinary experience it would be. I was in heaven with each bite, and I don’t say that lightly. In fact, I believe we both heard angels singing during our entire meal.
We also enjoyed the mushroom and cream dish, along with an assortment of seasonal tomatoes and pickles served with eccentric garnishes of nasturtium leaves and fern. For dessert, we enjoyed poached peaches and vanilla ice cream in a beautiful, gluten free presentation of lavender, lemon thyme, and yoghurt.
Every dish was positively outstanding, and delighted all of our senses. We have had the privilege of enjoying many incredible foods during our travels, and this was some of the best we’ve ever had. Angels with Bagpipes exceeding our every expectation, and is still a topic of discussion in our household, weeks after our visit.
During your next visit to Edinburgh, stop in for top notch service, award winning cuisine, and an enchanting atmosphere that will make you feel like you’re in heaven.
Safe Travels!
