The Lilac Suite is located on the third floor of Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan, and offers guests an impeccable view of the lake, Round Island Light, the ferries passing through the Straits of Mackinac, and the hotel’s gardens. This newly renovated suite is distinct from the moment you approach it. All of the other doors in the hotel are painted green, but this beautiful door is painted a lilac purple, which sets it apart from all the rest.
Upon entering, guests are transported to a splendid French inspired rendition of the island’s lilacs, which only makes sense because all of the lilacs on the island were brought here from France by French traders, more than 250 years ago. A delicate purple, white, and green color palette brings the garden of Carleton Varney’s mind to life, as he expresses the ephemeral beauty of the island’s Lilac Season through his impeccable design work. His design company, Dorothy Draper Co. has uniquely decorated all 397 guest rooms of Grand Hotel, and the Lilac Suite is some of his best work to date.
Two queen size beds within the room invites families, couples with children, friends, or adventurers to make the room their home for the duration of their stay inside Grand Hotel’s Lilac Suite. Framing the windows and doorways is a white, wooden lattice reminiscent of a garden trellis, which lends interest and added brightness to this summery room. 4 large bay windows outfitted with purple striped and tassled curtains offer a near floor to ceiling view of the incredible sights of the island and lake, and I can tell you from personal experience that there is no sweeter sight in all the world than waking up with sun, and enjoying a hot cup of coffee while watching ships pass over the water.
The spacious bathroom is outfitted with a beautiful rain shower, glass sliding doors adorned with the hotel’s monogram, and a large vanity countertop area which makes getting ready for the hotel’s phenomenal formal dinners an absolute joy. One of my favorite features of the room is the entryway’s gorgeous black and white checkerboard flooring, which calls to mind 15th century European works of art which often relied on dance floor or dining room scenes to entertain viewers. The Lilac Suite is truly a work of art in every way.
