We absolutely loved our time at Hotel Walloon, one of Michigan’s most beautiful places to visit, reconnect with loved ones, and to get married. After experiencing the indisputable charm, luxury, and elegance of Hotel Walloon, my husband and I agreed that we wish it would have been open when we got married, because we would have rented the entire hotel for our wedding and guests (which is an option!) and spent a long weekend with our loved ones and out of town guests. Check out why Hotel Walloon is one of the most beautiful hotels in the midwest, and one of the most luxurious hotels in the world.

The Hotel
Hotel Walloon felt like coming home after a long time away. The moment we stepped through the doors, we were welcomed by smiling staff, and ushered in beside a warm, cackling fire, while the staff quickly and efficiently checked us in. The entire hotel is decorated in a beautiful, nautical and cozy style, reminiscent of Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island. Every corner of Hotel Walloon is set up so that families can spend time together, whether it’s pouring over travel and photography books or enjoying drinks next to the fire, or playing out on the private beach, the entire hotel is designed to bring people together.
Hotel Walloon owns and works with several wedding venues, making it a gorgeous place to get married. Had this hotel been open when my husband and I were looking for places we would have selected Hotel Walloon, because it’s just so incredibly stunning, plus couples have the option to rent out the entire hotel! Keep an eye out for a list of reasons why Hotel Walloon is an incredible place to get married, and check out their website’s section on weddings in the meantime!

The Rooms
Our favorite part of the rooms was that it was absolutely silent in our room. Every one of the 32 rooms is completely soundproof, meaning that we couldn’t hear anyone or anything outside of our room, and no one could hear us, even if we played music or the TV loudly. We slept so peacefully, and loved waking up refreshed and replenished after sleeping completely undisturbed each night. Each room also has an electronic “Do Not Disturb” system, so that if you want peace and quiet, or don’t need housekeeping, no one will disturb you, no questions asked.

This stunning one bedroom suite had a kitchen (complete with a dishwasher, microwave, dishes and cutlery, along with anything guests need to cook or warm up leftovers), a large bedroom with a kingsize bed, a private balcony with a stunning view of Walloon Lake, a massive marble bathroom with a large glass shower, a beautiful living room, and plenty of room for up to four people to enjoy Hotel Walloon together. I don’t think I could have designed a more beautiful lake/cottage room myself!
The Amenities
Hotel Walloon has everything we needed for a beautiful stay. There was everything from a luxurious, custom billiards table in a gorgeous game room and a fully stocked workout room, to a Whirlpool spa with an incredible view of Walloon Lake and private beach and docks for the sole use of guests of the hotel. I had never seen more in room toiletries than we were given at Hotel Walloon. There were makeup remover wipes, locally made chapstick, moisturizers, mouth wash and dental care items, as well as locally crafted chocolates and much more.

One of my favorite parts of the hotel was the library and game room just to the right of the main entry way, because it has a wide selection of new and classic board games, as well as a carefully curated selection of all of the best novels and coffee table books about everything subject imaginable. Every day we saw families spending time together, laughing and playing board games or reading books together, and something about seeing so much joy and love in the hotel warmed my heart more than the constantly roaring fire in the fireplace could. Hotel Walloon is an incredible place to reconnect with your loved ones, and we were so grateful for our time spent here.
The Food
Hotel Walloon, not to be outdone by the likes of the Ritz Carleton or Waldorf Astorias of the world, ensures that guests always have something delectable and unique to snack on, at all hours of the day. In addition to the leather wrapped bar available on the ground floor in the Hearth Room available only to hotel guests from 5:00pm – 11:00 pm, Hotel Walloon staff set out food, drinks, and snacks for guests at no extra charge as follows:
Breakfast 7:00am – 11:00 am
Cookies 12:00pm – 11:00 pm
Mid-Day Snacks 11:00am – 5:00 pm
Hors D’oeuvres 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Desserts 8:00 – 11:00 pm
Breakfast included items like fruit, yogurt, pastries, muffins, coffee, tea, and a selection of breakfast items. Hors D’oeuvres included things like chicken satay, rice and grape leaves with yogurt, asparagus and croissants, and lots more. Desserts were complex like miniature cheesecakes, miniature cakes, donuts, chocolate covered almonds, a variety of candies, and just about anything imaginable. The food was all absolutely delicious, and the incredible staff kept everything fresh, fully stocked, and full of options.
Our favorite place to eat in the area, which is right next to Hotel Walloon, is Barrel Back Restaurant. Click here to read all about the delicious food that they offer.
The View
The view from Hotel Walloon is absolutely stunning, and many rooms have a view of Walloon Lake. Waking up every morning and watching the sun rise over Lake Walloon was one of the highlights of our stay. The fresh, cool air from Walloon Lake blew across the shore and into our room, which made opening the door out onto our balcony a refreshing part of our routine each morning.
The lake was lined with beautiful little cottages, docked sailboats, and trees, just beginning to change colors, and looking at it each evening as the sun went down quickly became something we looked forward to everyday.
The Staff
My husband and I have stayed in dozens of hotels, all around the world, and I can honestly say the staff of Hotel Walloon were some of the friendliest, kindest, most accommodating staff we’ve encountered at any hotel. Anything we needed was only a quick request away, and we were greeted each morning by smiles and staff who quickly learned our names. During our entire stay, we, along with the either guests, were treated like family. I am already looking forward to visiting again someday, and I can’t recommended Hotel Walloon enough!

Booked a stay here solely based on your recommendation, and I couldn’t have been happier with the time my wife and I spent here. It was as peaceful, relaxing, and romantic as you described. It helped me score some major husband points, so I wanted to come back and thank you. We are new to the area and didn’t know of many other places to go, so this guide was just what we needed. Your work is very much appreciated.
