We’ve spent quite a bit of time in Portland, Maine, and out of all of the hotels we’ve enjoyed there, The Evalina Hotel has been our favorite. Imagine a spacious, modern apartment with all the convenience and service of your favorite hotel— that’s The Evalina. Our massive two-bedroom deluxe suite had a bathroom larger than most hotel rooms, a full kitchen, an in-suite washer and dryer, and a full living room, plus plenty of closet space, storage, and hallways. It was everything we needed to enjoy Portland to the fullest. Plus, each room is soundproof, so we slept extremely well. Here’s everything you need to know about The Evalina Hotel.

Arrival

Check-in was a bit different at The Evalina Hotel than other places I’ve stayed. We were given a code for both the front door and a different one for our suite. There were no staff to greet us at check-in or help us with our bags, but the seamless entry meant we were able to go straight up to our rooms, no in-person check-in required. After driving across Maine, this was a big relief! The lobby is flush with the street, and there’s an elevator to every floor, so bringing in our own bags was no trouble at all.

That said, we did receive a text prior to arrival asking if we needed anything. If you do require special assistance, arrange it beforehand. Their staff was excellent and very attentive. When we texted to ask for more towels, they brought them over in just a couple of moments. The staff are only a text away.

Our Deluxe Suite With Balcony

Our suite was huge. The entryway opened into a spacious hall that led to one bedroom with a king bed and a walk-in closet off to the left, beside the sprawling bathroom, and another off to the right with the same setup. Each bedroom had a walk-in closet, wide dressers, full-length mirrors, and plenty of room for all of our things. All linens were made locally by Portland artisans, adding an extra-special sense of place to our accommodations. The modern Scandinavian-designed furniture made each bedroom cozy, chic, and perfectly comfortable.

Ahead of the entryway was yet more storage, a washer and dryer, and a full kitchen stocked with everything we needed to cook up fantastic meals during our stay. Complimentary coffee beans were waiting for us on the counter, and the full-sized refrigerator was stocked with bevies for us to enjoy. We made a few great meals during our stay, and enjoying them on the balcony as the sun set over Portland is a wonderful memory I’ll never forget. Plus, the hotel was just a short walk away from Portland staples like Luke’s Lobster, Twelve, Via Vecchia, and The Juicery.

Beyond that was the living room and the walkout balcony with an outdoor table and chairs. Our suite had everything we needed during our stay, and it was perfect for long-term exploration of the area. Plus, it was really beautiful, too! I loved the white marble, the different levels of lighting, and the huge kitchen island. I left feeling so inspired for our upcoming home renovations!

The Verdict

I loved staying at The Evalina Hotel. It felt like borrowing a dear friend’s pied-à-terre for an extended stay more than staying at a hotel. For those seeking comfort, open space, and the convenience of a contact-less check-in, The Evalina Hotel is the best option in Portland. I’d definitely visit again!
