Deer Restaurant in Prague’s Old Town may seem like an odd place to dine for pescatarians like my husband and I. After all, they coin themselves as venison specialists. Nonetheless, this restaurant was recommended several times, so we decided to try it for ourselves. They had numerous gluten-free, vegetarian, and pescatarian options on their menu, many of which were classic Czech dishes. I’m very glad we did! Like all of the amazing food we enjoyed in Prague, Deer Restaurant Prague was flavorful, beautifully decorated, and an overall excellent experience.

The Ambience
The restaurant was bright and airy, and very inviting. The decor was a beautiful mixture of richly colored brocade fabrics with tropical bird motifs, lush plants, and dark bamboo and rattan furniture. It felt like eating in a tranquil garden. The indoor dining area was quite a bit like a tavern, which I thought was lovely. The rich color palette of the decor was very warm and welcoming, and as is common in Europe, we never once felt rushed through our meal.
Deer Restaurant Prague & Our Meals
While their website says they specialize in venison, I think it’s more accurate to emphasize that they really take care to preserve Czech culture through food. Our waiter explained to us some of the traditional meals they serve in order to preserve the recipes, and we learned that many of the recipes they use here are family recipes that have been cooked, shared, and enjoyed for generations.
While much of traditional Czech food contained meat and, therefore, we couldn’t eat it, we did very much enjoy our brunch here. More English in nature, they still used seasonal, local ingredients as often as possible, as well as Czech cooking techniques, for a unique flavor experience, unlike any other brunch we’ve had. Fresh herbs, salted butter, and liberal use of seasoning made the flavors really jump off the plate at us.

Everything was very flavorful and delicious, and the presentation was lovely as well. I am a huge fan of pickled vegetables as well as grilled vegetables, so seeing these on the menu was a great surprise.
Final Thoughts
This restaurant is 100% worth a visit when in Prague. Our meals were fantastic, the service was excellent, the atmosphere was lovely, and the location was conveniently accessible from Old Town and our nearby hotel. If you’re touring the main sites of Prague’s Old Town, this isn’t far out of the way. One of our favorite aspects of this place was how many dining options there were. We could have eaten indoors or in the proper garden, but we instead dined in the intermediate greenhouse area, and it was a delightful experience as a light rain fell overhead, making the entire experience that much cozier.
I definitely recommend Deer Restaurant Prague!
