The Charming Village of Homnøy
Near the southern tip of the Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway’s Arctic Circle, the charming village of Homnøy may occupy a small island, but its beautiful buildings have captured the hearts of people all over the world. Rorbuer, or fishing cabins, are the iconic red buildings that dot the island and surrounding Lofoten. Some are open to the public as rentals (like this one over the water or this one), but most are lodging for the fisherwomen and fishermen who work the waters around Lofoten. We stopped here as part of our road trip through Lofoten, and it was easy to see why it’s become such a draw in the area.
We only passed through, as there isn’t a tremendous amount of things to do in Homnøy if you’re not fishing. Even so, it’s worth a stop to take in the mountains, waterfalls in the distance, unique architecture, and a stunning view of the fjords and ocean on the horizon. We saw and did so many incredible things, from sauna-ing on the rocky cliffs and hiking towering mountains under midnight sun to skinny dipping in the frigid ocean, bathing under icy waterfalls, sailing, and fishing for our dinner, we did as much as we could in the week and a half we spent in Northern Norway.
