Our Adventure in Mexico: One Month, 8 Cities

Although we had to cut our trip short because I became extremely sick and needed to come home, we had such an incredible time in Mexico this past month! We were able to stay in 8 different cities and pass through a number of others, and it was an adventure unlike any other. I’d been to northern Mexico, but only passing through, and I’m so thankful I finally had the opportunity to venture deeper into such a vibrant and diverse country.

We began our adventure in Mexico City, where we found colorful markets, some of the friendliest people in the world, vibrant colors, and people proudly sharing their rich cultural heritage with everyone who would stop and share it with them through music, dance, food, and crafts.

After Mexico City, we headed south to the state (and city) of Querétaro, where old colonial buildings, an incredible art scene, and cobblestone streets lined with buildings in a rainbow of vibrant hues greeted us. We hit the ground running and ventured all around the city of QRO and into San Miguel Adalante and Guanajuato, which are each an hour and a half from Querétaro by car.

There, we tried new regional foods, and were forced to rely on my Spanish speaking capabilities (which were thankfully still sharp after 4 years of not practicing), because no one in this area spoke any English at all. Many of our dinners were enjoyed on rooftops and mountaintops watching the sunsets, while we dreamed of what the next day would hold.

A little more than a week in Querétaro could never be enough, but we hopped on a plane to meet the Yucatán peninsula anyway, because neither of us had ever been anywhere tropical before, unless you count Florida (which we don’t haha), and I had some incredible collaborations lined up for us. Cancún was our first stop, where we picked up a rental car (thank you Avis!), and cruised on down to the beach front town of Tulum, where we ate some of the best food I’ve ever had in my entire life in some of the coolest places I’ve ever seen.

In Tulum, we stayed in overwater bungalows and a beachfront luxury resort with a health-centric focus, explored ancient Mayan ruins, swam in cenotes and through caves, haggled with locals, met some of the most talented and environmentally conscious people in the world, and inadvertently filled our suitcases with sand. One of my favorite memories in Tulum was watching a thunderstorm play out over the jungle at the Kitchen Table restaurant, while the sunset in fiery colors, tucked next to a fire while the expert chefs at Kitchen Table cooked up incredible Mayan fusion dishes for us.

When our time was up in Tulum, we headed to Cobá to visit some of the largest Mayan ruins in Mexico, and climbed atop a massive pyramid in the center of virgin jungle. From Cobá, we headed to Playa del Carmen, explored the Riviera Maya, and Puerto Morelos. Somewhere along the way, I became debilitatingly ill, and we had to cut our trip short while in Cancún, which was disappointing, but I’m thankful that I was able to make it back to the United States without any issues.
